NETS-T Self-Assessment:

How I Feel I Measure up Against the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS-T)

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity: Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

YES, but I think this depends on the school district and what is expected out of a teacher and what the district will allow them to do. It also depends on how well the teacher feels personally about using technology. Personally as long as I am trained and feel comfortable using techbology to promote, support and model creativity in the classroom I will do it. Students today are so adept at using technology that if a teacher does not use it in the classroom, she is doing them an injustice.
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.
YES, but this depends on the grade. Maybe starting at fourth grade on up. I know my middle schooler did alot of research on the computer for her geography class. In the lower elementary I think it is a time constrant. Teachers seem to not have enough time to teach the things they want to. Another factor is having enough computers in the classroom to be able to have the whole class do an asssignment and or having "working" computers. In my last field experience the third grade teacher had three computers in the classroom that did not work and because of budgit cuts the district did not have anyone available to fix them.
b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.
I understand what this question is asking, but I am not sure how to relate it to technology. Maybe in the form of tests? If so, many schools use the AR Reading Program that assesses student's understanding of a book that they just read.
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students' conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.
Yes this would be true for me.I think many times teachers learn right along with the students as somehting is taught, like technology. With technology comes many new updates and new ways of doing things, so if a teacher does not collaborate with colleagues and learn how to these things then she will be lagging behind, and not be ready for the future.
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.

2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments: Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:

Again this depends on the district and the teacher. If a teacher likes technology then she will use it in her classroom. For me, I like to use technology to enhance what I am teaching. I ask myself what can I do to help me get the content across to the students. This might be in the form of a powerpoint or the use of a smart board, and now with the knowledge of what was learned in this technology class , it could be a Glog or a digital movie.
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.
Many districts have a program where students can keep track of their grades, but I have not seen anything where students use technology to set goals, manage their learning or assess their progress. I think it is a great idea. I see teachers using this for themselves to keep track of students. In my last field experience (third grade) the teacher had several assignments going on at one time. Some students would turn them in right away and with others it took awhile. In my mind I thought what I would do is have a space for each subject around the room, post what the assignment was or what we were doing in that subject and have a check off list of who had completed it. But if the students had access to a computer based program where they could do this, then it would take up less space and be easy for them to keep track of. Something to think about.
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
Without using technology, teachers can improve in promoting student's diverse learning styles. I think teachers do not put the time into "thinking" about doing this, because it is very time consuming. The way I look at it is if I have students that need help because they learn differently, then I will do all I can to help them, which means using tecnology.
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students' diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.
All teachers do this with the State Standardized Tests and what ever the district has them do. I think a good example of this is the AR Math program. Students get a certain number of math problems according to what is being taught at the time, and solve them. They bubble in their answers on a scantron sheet which is run through a scanner. The students get a printout of their score along with more math problems. The new problems will be similar to the ones they have missed until the student has mastered that math skill. Once the math skill has been mastered the students move forward with new math problems. This is a great technology tool to help the students assess themselves on how well they are doing in math. It would be great to have a program like this for all subjects. It would help the teacher grade and provide immediate feedback to students.
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching.

3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning: Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:

I have learned alot about technology, but feel like I need to learn more. One of the things I have learned about technology is to not be afraid of it. Take the bull by the horns and run with it so to speak. For me technology is not hard, it is actually easy. What is hard about technology is the "learning." I think the word that describes it the most is "frustrating." Once a concept is learned it is fairly easy to use. So, to be fluent in technology and to stay abreast of current technology, I will continue to stay in that "learning mode" and seek the knowledge to use it.
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations.
Yes for me I can see myself using emails, classroom websites, classroom news letters, presentations with power points (now with digital movies) or presenting classroom work with a glog. One can be very creative if you put the time and energy into it.
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation.
This is the same question as above. One of the formates my daughter"s middle school teacher uses is the classroom website. Everything goes on it. So, if she or I need to look at instructions, directions, calendars, pictures, etc... it is all there.
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.
I love google. The internet is in my opinion the best tool to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning, and if you can't find the information, it can help connect you to someone who can.
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning.

4. Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility: Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:

I think in the public this subject gets abused. But for a teacher, one must take caution to abide by the rules and regulations so that no laws are broken, for the students, herself, her school, and her district.
a. advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.
Again answered in the question above, but to add to this I would use any assisstive tecnology that may help a student with a disability or diverse learning need. I would make sure that a student has a computer that is equipped with assisstive tecnology. There are many computer programs that help a student learn at their level (such as the AR Math).
b. address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.
I think this pertains to what is said in emails and maybe facebook. As a teacher one must uphold certain values in and out of the classroom and this pertains to the use of technology too.
c. promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.
In my reading class we did a wiki with a second grade class in Texas, but I think it would be great to do one with a class from another country. How great would it be to hear how people form other countries do things, with a one to one correspondence.
d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital-age communication and collaboration tools.

5. Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership: Teachers continuously improve their professional practice, model lifelong learning, and exhibit leadership in their school and professional community by promoting and demonstrating the effective use of digital tools and resources. Teachers:

I am not sure what this would consist of, but maybe be inviloved in a school commitee on the use of technology in the classroom.
a. participate in local and global learning communities to explore creative applications of technology to improve student learning.
Since I feel like a baby at technology exhibiting leadership would be farther on down the road. But I am always willing to share with others what I know about technology, such as if a college needed help with how to do somehting on the computer.
b. exhibit leadership by demonstrating a vision of technology infusion, participating in shared decision making and community building, and developing the leadership and technology skills of others.
Yes I think reflecting on technology is a good thing. Things go out of date, need modified, or changed in ways to better help the learning of students.
c. evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning.
As a teacher one can not stay on a plataue, but must learn new and better ways of teaching which will include technology. This will contribute to the effectiveness of one's teaching and to the teaching profession as a whole.
d. contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community.
